Entry to a Hot Chocolate 15/5K Race Giveaway

by Jennifer Wieland

As I talked about yesterday, I am now an official Hot Chocolate Blogger. Now this lovely, little title gives my readers a chance to win entry to a Hot Chocolate 15/5K race giveaway at the end of this post. This is a fun race and getting to do it for free would make it even better! I know some of you may be excited about this and I know that some of you are thinking, I can’t do this. I am to out of shape. Where do I begin? There is no way that I could do that.

Let me tell you. You can do this. How do I know. I know because I am not in shape currently. I was not even in shape the first time I did the race. I have spent the last few years with a string of varying but almost constant health problems. After having my four-year old daughter my health just seemed to have tanked. For the first couple years of her life I was constantly unable to function normally. I had 8 surgeries on my legs, feet, abdominal region and girlie parts in a two-year time span. It was a form of hell for someone who is always needing to do something. My inability to walk for a good part of two years for more than a few minutes caused me to gain weight… A LOT OF WEIGHT. I have never been small but with being unable to walk or not able to lift or do much with abdominal stitches just meant that everything I ate was being added on as weight and not burned off.

So how did I manage to do a 5K before? I was doing physical therapy for my feet and one ankle and my brother, his fiance and my parents had decided to do the Hot Chocolate. My brother being the marathon runner that he is was doing the 15K and the rest of the group was doing the 5K. I asked my podiatrist and physical therapist if I could do it too since walking on a treadmill was part of my therapy. They said I could as long as I felt good and stopped if anything happened. So one month after having a peroneal tendon bovine graft done on my right ankle I did my first ever 5K. I walked, I hobbled and used a folding cane for a bit but I finished. It took me about an hour but I had such a sense of accomplishment when I finished and was still able to walk.

I have had more health issues in the time since then so I have never gotten rid of all of the weight or got back to being healthy but I am working on it. My brother’s fiance and I decided a few months back that we were going to do this again. She wants to get ready for her wedding and I just want to feel better than I have in a long while. I am not going to break records or maybe even be able to run it but I have set a health goal and am making it happen next month.

So if any of you are afraid to try a race… don’t be. Racers are a supportive group of people. Don’t worry about your weight, or how you look or what people may think of you doing a race being overweight. Think about the emotional high you will get being able to say I did this! It will make you think, if I can do this, then what else can I do? It will motivate you like nothing else. So grab some friends and/or family and set your goal to try.

If you do plan on doing the Chicago race be sure to give me a wave if you are running past me or if you are walking it feel free to walk along with me. 🙂
