Patriotic Pom Pom Glow Stick Necklaces

by Jennifer Wieland

Fireworks, red, white and blue are all things you will see on 4th of July. Most people like the boom and splashes of color from all of the fireworks that seems to make the 4th of July a truly magical holiday and inspiring way to honor our American history. Due to sensory issues though about all my younger kids can handle in the fireworks department on the 4th of July is the poppers you toss on the ground and sparklers. We have to have ear gear so that the noises do not incite an emotional meltdown and we often end up sitting inside at their request. Since this is the case I decided that this year I was going to make them some glow stick necklaces to wear while enjoying their sparklers so that they too could feel a little more festive before the noise becomes too much. That’s why I came up with the simple Patriotic Pom Pom Glow Stick Necklaces that can be worn two ways so that they can take your little ones from daytime to nighttime 4th of July events.

Cute, festive and simple to make these necklaces can easily be made by the children who are going to wear them out this 4th of July.

Supplies to Make 2 Necklaces

36-40 pom poms  (I found these fun, festive ones at Jo-Ann by the registers for $1.)

Thin elastic cord

2 pk. of 4″ glow sticks with attachable loops for hanging (I picked up these red, white & blue ones at the dollar store.)

Needles (If the kids are going to make these I would suggest tapestry needles as the ends are rounded.)

Lay out your pom poms in the order you want to place them on the necklace. Place the hanging piece for the glow stick halfway through the layout. Thread a needle with the elastic cord and then feed the needle and thread through the pom poms and glow stick hanger. Tie off the elastic cord and cut the excess cord.

The necklaces can be worn with or without the glow sticks. Once it gets dark out pop the glow stick into the holder and the kids have their own light up necklace all done up in red, white & blue. You can even set the supplies up at your 4th of July party as a way to entertain the kids during the afternoon and early evening.

Ignore the weeds and grass. It has been raining here like crazy and we are just a tad behind on yard work.
