I love baking up treats with and for my kids during the holidays. I love seeing their faces when they try a new treat and waiting for their reactions. My favorite is always when they take one bite, chew quietly with no expression and then snatch a few more treats and run off exclaiming that they love them. In my mind nothing screams kid friendly more than a dessert decked out with colorful M&M’S®. They just add a level of fun and whimsy that any child or child at heart can relate to. My M&M’S® Frosted Cookie Bars are a perfect example.

The M&M’S® Holiday Baking Minis are what I prefer to use during the holiday season. The colors are perfect and the smaller M&M’S® means you get more M&M’S® in each bite! That is definitely a huge plus.

Target always has a great holiday baking section and I can always head there and find just what I need to create my holiday sweet treat masterpieces. For my M&M’S® Frosted Cookie Bars I was able to stock up on M&M’S® Holiday Baking Minis, Quaker Instant Oatmeal in Original and even festively decorated Glad® products to keep my treats at the peak of freshness longer.

There are several reasons why I just adore my M&M’S® Frosted Cookie Bars. First of all, they are of course delicious beyond belief. Second, I love taking cookie dough and baking it in a pan like you would brownies. One of the things that annoys be about cooking baking is the repetitiveness of it. Put a pan or two of cookies in the oven, cook it 8-15 minutes and then do the same thing over and over again until you are done cooking all of the dough. It makes it hard to get other things done during the busy holiday times. One pan in and done is the way to go!

Adding the frosting always adds a level of childish fun to cookies. Topping them with M&M’S® Holiday Baking Minis is just the finishing touch that puts this dessert over the top.

Peanut Butter M&M Blondies

by Jennifer Wieland
Peanut Butter M&M Blondies

I love baking! It is a form of relaxation and enjoyment for me. Even with that though sometimes I just want baking to be done fast. I don’t want to wait for pan after pan of cookies or bake, cool and frost a cake or cupcakes. No, sometimes what you really need is a dessert that you whip up the dough for fast and toss it all in a pan and bake in a relatively short time. Something that you don’t even need to wait for it to completely cool but can enjoy your first heavenly bite while it’s still warm. This was what happened to me the other day. I had the urge to bake but since I have been dieting I didn’t want to be overly tempted and opted to make Peanut Butter M&M Blondies.

Peanut Butter M&M Blondies

I love baking with peanut butter. It always adds such great flavor and being a house full of peanut butter lovers means whatever I make with it is guaranteed to be a hit. I decided to make them seasonally appropriate by using the Valentine’s Day Peanut Butter M&Ms that come in red, pink and white. I also chose the Peanut Butter M&Ms over Reese’s Pieces because they have chocolate and peanut butter inside of them. This gives a nice subtle hint of chocolate when eating the blondies. I also used a smaller amount of peanut butter to give a lighter peanut butter flavor than you get in some peanut butter cookies. These Peanut Butter M&M Blondies have a great peanut butter flavor and are a great dessert to serve to a crowd.

Pot of Gold Brownie Bites

by Jennifer Wieland
Pot of Gold Brownie Bites

With Valentine’s Day behind us it is now time to move on to the next big festive holiday. Next month will be St. Patrick’s Day and it’s a huge event here in Chicago. There are pub crawls, numerous parades and the Chicago River is dyed green. With our large Irish population we like to do it right. Celebrations go on for weeks. So in honor of this fun day I decided to make a sweet treat that kids and adults will enjoy.

My kids had once again wanted to cook with me so I came up with these little gems on Monday since they were off school for President’s Day and we had too much snow to go out and do anything. This helped to keep them occupied and they were so excited about how fun looking they were when we finished making them. Luckily, I had everything on hand already so these were really a quick and easy thing to make. If you are planning on throwing or attending any St. Patrick’s Day celebrations then these would be sure to be a hit.

Note to self: Do not feed these to your children when you are stuck at home with them and will have to deal with the sugar overload on your own.

  1. 1 box of frosted brownie mix (Mix prepared according to package instructions.)
  2. M&M's Minis in yellow and brown
  3. 1 pkg. of Airheads Xtremes Rainbow Candy
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350° and spray a mini cupcake pan with baking spray.
  2. Mix the cupcake mix according to the back of the package. Scoop mix into the mini cupcake pan and bake for 18 - 20 minutes. Let the brownie bites cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes and then move to a wire rack to finish cooling.
  3. Once cooled completely, open the frosting packet and lightly frost the bottom of the brownies. Place four brown mini M&Ms on the bottom as the feet of the pot. Now frost the top of the brownie bites and place yellow mini M&Ms in the center. Cut the Airheads Xtremes in half and take one half and lightly press the ends into the frosting to create an arched rainbow.

M&M Cookies

by Jennifer Wieland
M&M Cookies

FTC Disclosure12 days

So today is day four of My 12 Days of Sweets and I have decided to bring you a kid favorite treat. It’s another M&M cookie but this one is just plain old regular M&M Cookies that just happens to be super soft and chewy. M&M cookies are always a hit with my kids and I know a ton of other ones that think the same. So find some seasonal M&M minis or just some regular M&M minis and head into the kitchen to whip up a batch of yum!

Why M&M minis you ask? Well you can use regular M&Ms but, and this is a big but. The M&M distribution is not as great in cookie dough when you use regular M&Ms, especially if you are making smaller sized cookies for little ones. If you use regular M&Ms you get maybe a few per cookie but if you use the mini ones you get many more and it makes for prettier and better tasting M&M cookies.

  3. Roll the dough into 1" balls. I use a regular cookie scoop and divide the scooped dough in half. Bake for 8-10 minutes. The cookies may look like they need to bake longer but do not. Remove them from the oven and let them cool on the pan for five minutes. The sugar continues to cook the cookies while they are cooling. This will ensure a soft and chewy cookie.

Pumpkin Spice M&M Cookies

by Jennifer Wieland

I was able to spend the day yesterday working on some new recipes, posts and getting my daughter’s Chromebook setup. The day had been going relatively well. That is until I was rushing to cook dinner and get online to a chat room with some other bloggers for a weekly meet-up that we do. As I am finishing up cooking dinner, my son Luke comes up to me and says, “Ellie is in a LOT of trouble! She put makeup all over herself and my desk.” My response was, “WHAT!?!?” I then yelled up to my husband who was upstairs with her to look into this. He promptly started yelling for me to get upstairs.

I walked into Jackson and Luke’s room and came to an abrupt stop where my mouth dropped open for what felt like a minute. After that I don’t know exactly what I said. I know there was yelling and probably some cussing too but, OH MY GOD! That child hadn’t gotten into my makeup per se. No, my dear sweet little girl got into every single bottle of nail polish I own, and I own around 50 bottles. She had painted herself in a vast array of colors. So not only was she covered head to toe in nail polish but she had managed to get layers of it on in places. She smiled proudly, thinking she was beautiful with gobs of dry and drying nail polish spattered on her face and body. (She was too.)

My total shock and freak out because of this may seem excessive, but well, my daughter is going to grow up to be a tattoo girl. Which is fine, but we have had to hide all markers in the house or else she colors herself completely if she finds any of them. Don’t worry, we got rid of all the Sharpies a long time ago after learning the hard way how to remove it best from skin. (Rubbing alcohol but not on her face. We used baby oil to lighten that up.) We also learned that same lesson with getting Sharpies off of a LCD TV and furniture. (Toothpaste, not the gel kind, and gently scrub with a damp cloth.) I digress though. The reason for my freak out was yes, she had once again colored herself and I was one again going to have to clean it but it was also that today is school picture day.

Out of all the days she could have done this it had to be shortly before bed, while I am rushing to get to something and trying to get school bags ready for tomorrow. Ugh! I had my husband get her in the tub. Ran and got dinner plated up. Then headed back upstairs to scrub the Dickens out of her skin. It did come off with much scrubbing and she should look okay for pictures today. Looking at it now, after I have had some time to relax, I am sad that I didn’t take a picture. Oh the horror story picture to show future dates that would have made.

Before things went off the deep end here last night with Ellie though, I was able to bake some out of this world cookies for the fall season. These pumpkin spice M&M cookies are a great alternative to a chocolate chip cookie during the fall months and holidays. They are a change from the standard pumpkin pie and also make a great treat when trying to escape your daughter’s bizarre behavior.
